Living in Tennessee means you’re no stranger to freezing temperatures. Your home is also no stranger to the cold temperatures, but the pipes in your home are. Thanks to the nature of water and its ability to expand when it gets cold outside, it can create a buildup of pressure inside of your pipes, causing them to burst. Don’t think for a second that just because you haven’t had to experience it thus far in your life that you have nothing to worry about. The winter can be awfully unpredictable and cruel to some homeowners, so it is best to prepare to minimize any potential damage.

How to Prepare Your Home for Extended Time Away

Here are some things you can do to prepare your home so that your pipes don’t freeze and damage your home while you are away.

  • Drain your appliances.
  • Shut off the main water valve.
  • Shut off the water heater.
  • Surround your pipes and appliances with insulation to keep them from getting too cold and freezing.
  • Make an appointment to have your HVAC system serviced before you leave.
  • Don’t turn your thermostat all the way down. Set it no lower than 55 degrees to prevent your pipes from freezing.
  • Unplug any electrical appliances that are necessary while you are away.
  • Enlist one of your family, friends or neighbors to check on your home at least twice a week while you are out of town.
  • Keep the number to your most trusted plumber, electrician and ERT on speed dial just in case something goes wrong.

Following the above tips can help to keep your home safe and intact if you plan to be away for several days. No matter the length of your trips, taking preventative measures now will ensure that you are not faced with an expensive disaster when you return home.
